The dawn of a new era in industrial automation
Industrial history is replete with paradigm shifts that come about without much fanfare. Apart from Industry 4.0, which was an exception, many inflection points in manufacturing have transpired silently, for example, the invention and implementation of the initial programmable logic controller (PLC) in the 1970s. In a similar shift, the industry is currently witnessing a change in customer mindset driven by a confluence of multiple disruptive factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, macroeconomic uncertainty, global competition, and rapidly changing consumer demands. Using technology to combat the skilled labor shortage
The labor shortage issue has been around for years. As the previous generation of skilled laborers retires, the next wave of laborers entering the workforce is not nearly of the same scale. To further add to the complexity, manufacturing is not slowing down. The state of skilled labor has been below equilibrium for some time. A 2020 study by the Workforce Institute found that prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were already projections of a 6 million-worker shortage in manufacturing by 2030.

Choosing between variable speed drives and soft starters
Demand for industrial products has risen considerably over the past two decades — and with that, we've seen an increase in energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. As pressure to minimise consumption mounts, how can industry reduce its environmental impact? Here John Young, APAC sales director of automation parts supplier EU Automation, suggests two changes that can make a big difference — variable speed drives (VSDs) and soft starters. More...

Maximum flexibility and optimum performance from linear robots
The global industrial robots market size grew from US$47.52 billion in 2020 to US$53 billion in 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.5%, according to a report by The Business Research Company (TBRC). The growth is attributed mainly to the companies resuming their operations and adapting to the new normal while recovering from the COVID-19 impact, which had earlier led to restrictive containment measures involving social distancing, remote working, and the closure of commercial activities that resulted in operational challenges.
